M.I.T (Murder Investigation Team) are a team of police officers who specialise in murder investigations. The show’s first plot-line was launched from the long-running police series THE BILL when long-standing regular Sgt Matthew Boyden was gunned down in a street in the preceding BILL episode and MIT were called in to investigate. Other than this initial crossover there were no further contacts with THE BILL regulars. All the characters in MIT were new and had not previously appeared in THE BILL. The series returned in 2005 with longer 90 minute episodes and a much changed cast retaining only 3 of the original cast – the new cast now including Diane Parish as DC Eva Sharpe reprising her character from THE BILL. Series 1 was billed as M.I.T., series 2 had the title fully spelt out.
The MIT abbreviation was removed from the international broadcasts to avoid confusion with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first series was filmed with the working title Think Murder.
The first series debuted on 3 May 2003, and ran for eight episodes. After a two year hiatus, a second series of four 90-minute episodes aired in 2005.
